Timex Watches Military - In addition, this mail-spec Timex watch case, like those made by Benros under the same guidelines, is made of very light plastic. We're not talking high-grade military design plastic, we're talking elementary school lunchroom white plastic.
Sure, it's light, but the color really makes the watch interesting and fun to wear. Retail Price AU$23.43 AU$23.43 Again, 1982 was a pivotal year in Timex's history - it was the year they stopped producing mechanical movements.

According to Timex's own documents, production of the hand-wound movement ceased in July 1982, and management saw it as several years ahead of its time. Why did Temex get a government contract in February 1982 if they stopped production just a few months later?

Meeting my best friend lmao) Sale Price AU$58.38 The Timex Mil-Spec W-46374B is a very attractive watch. It was produced for a relatively short period of time to standards that discredited it as a true "throwback" watch.
Still, the only true Timex military watch has achieved grail status for those who love the brand, and certainly those who have a passion for the American military. It's also the true inspiration for the J.Crew / Timex watches, but we're guessing the 1940s sounds more interesting to J.Crew's marketing people than "two months in the early '80s."

They can't be blamed for that. Then we have motion. This thing is very simple and really funny. Again, like the Benros watches that came before it, this Timex is built with a simple hand-wound caliber that, while intended for combat (in theory), is not at all powerful in reality.

These watches, with their plastic cases and very cheap movements, were designed to be thrown away after breaking, not repaired. Timex actually has a long history of manufacturing watches for the United States government. These include bomb timers, stopwatches, and of course watches.
But you already know about that last one, right? After all, a Timex/J.Crew military watch is issued to practically every white man under the age of 40 when he walks down South of 34th Street. But, the problem is, Timex and J.Crew claim that the watches they sell are made in homage to US military special watches from the 1940s.
This is not correct. In fact, Timex only had a contract with the US government to make watches for mail features, and that was in the 1980s. Other Timex watches were made and then purchased by the military for production, but this is not the same thing.
We hope you enjoyed looking at the one and only genuine Timex military watch and when your friend tells you that his watch is modeled after a military model from the 40s, you know what to do.

to work While the J.Crew connection piques our interest, the watch is ultimately interesting for different reasons. First, we know it's rare, but we don't know how rare it is. Try to find one for sale.
Seriously, just try. They don't exist. According to several Times experts and the military, the watch may never have been purchased by the government. Therefore it is very possible. Something about J.Crew / Timex military watches has never really appealed to us.

They claim it's modeled after a watch made to military specifications in the 1940s, but we've never been able to find that watch. Even when we went to the vault at Timex we saw 1940s watches, but they didn't look like the modern interpretations that we often see on the hands of young suitors.

So, we set out on a mission to find out where this design came from, and when, if ever, Timex had a military contract to make watches. We found the watch that inspired the J.Crew piece, but we knew it wasn't from the 1940s, but from the first half of 1982.
